The goanna sat sunning itself on a log. The small child said. “How did the lizard get its name goanna?” Grandpa sat thinking on another log, He then said.

“A long time ago when the first settlers came here,”

“A young couple set out on their horse and buggy for their new property. It was a long ride, and after awhile the lady who was called Anna, needed to go to the toilet.”

“While walking to a bush, she spotted a huge lizard. Having never seen a lizard so big before, she ran back to the wagon screaming, and she shakily told her husband that she would wait.”

Her husband nearly fell off the wagon he was laughing so much, at seeing his wife run so fast, and he said “Go Anna go.”

“After meeting some new friends at the local Inn he told the story of his wife and the lizard, and soon word had got around and everyone just kept on calling the monitor lizard a goanna.”

“So that is how the first settlers started to call the large lizard a goanna.”
