A woman named Albina Duggan was diagnosed with Stage IV Cancer (a serious stage) for this illness. This woman, a young Mom of four children states she was simply devastated with the news from her doctors that she could have three to five years of her precious life left! Her cancer had spread from her liver to her spine and lymph nodes. Wow! Five years later this 41-year-old mother of four has beaten the odds: Her tumors have shrunk by half and doctors are no longer limiting her life expectancy. Albina Duggan says her cure was found in a glass of grapefruit juice and new drug being clinically tried as a method of treatment for this serious illness. The drug is called rapamycin and in Albina’s treatment it was prescribed to include the supplementation by grapefruit juice.
A University of Chicago clinical trial showed a chemical in grapefruit juice boosted the effectiveness of the cancer-fighting drug rapamycin. A daily glass of freshly frozen juice paired with a weekly dose of the drug helped stop tumor growth, according to the clinical study leader. Grapefruit juice contains chemicals that block its enzymes which would normally protect you from toxic chemicals. Grapefruit juice metabolizes toxins into harmless byproducts. These chemicals, called furanocoumarins, prevent rapamycin from being broken down so that it can be absorbed completely in the body.
It was interesting I thought when I read that, To avoid dangerously high doses of medication; patients are often advised to not wash down pills with grapefruit juice because unlike most beverages, grapefruit juice contains a chemical that boosts the potency of many drugs in the body. However the juice you buy in the grocery store is not the quality which can used for treatment. As if by precious design, a citrus monitoring and regulatory department in Florida saw a report about Cohen’s work on television. The department contacted Cohen and told him the key chemicals in grapefruit juice have a short shelf life and can break down during the time it takes to process and sell the juice; then they suggested and sent Dr. Cohen a more potent form of the juice that had been freshly frozen. This juice was effective in raising drug levels in the blood of the patients involved in the studies. This caused Dr. Cohen to wonder if that quality of grapefruit juice could be used to boost the effectiveness of other cancer fighting drugs!
Rapamycin prevents cells from multiplying, which is important for keeping cancer growth in check. But because an enzyme in the intestine breaks down the drug, only a fraction of the rapamycin a patient swallows gets into the system, Cohen said. Grapefruit juice contains chemicals that block this enzyme, which, he said, “normally protects us from other toxic chemicals and metabolizes them to harmless byproducts.” These chemicals, called furanocoumarins, prevent rapamycin from being broken down so the body can absorb more of it. Mrs. Albina Duggan said her life expectancy is “indefinite.” “There is nothing in my charts that will point to any number,” she said. “I might outlive everybody.”
Response from another blogger:
“The point here is that grapefruit contains a substance called naringen which affects how your liver and detoxification system detoxifies certain drugs. This can be cleverly used by the medical profession who know what they are doing Vis a Vis mixing grapefruit juice with certain drugs, but should not be attempted by the public if they are taking drugs, without consulting a medical professional first. Many prescription drugs carry a warning about not consuming grapefruit juice if you are on the drugs. So there’s nothing magical about grapefruit juice: Its pure biochemistry. Having said that though; I am a big supporter of following a whole foods diet for health and fruits and vegetables are a big part of this, of course. Just be safe out there and if you are taking drugs, check with your doctor first about consuming grapefruit juice while on them.”
Sounds like good advice to me. Isn’t it amazing to see what can happen when regulations are removed? I bet you did not know the citrus manufacturers sell less potent grapefruit juice; probably to avoid a law suit in this day and age. It is too bad that our economy is such that we must resort to law suits to get ahead – perhaps many more people could have received a cure if this was not the case. I guess this is why it is so important to let love be first in your hearts and minds.

This article is very interesting…until the last paragragh.
“I bet you did not know the citrus manufacturers sell less potent grapefruit juice; probably to avoid a law suit (sic) in this day and age.”
I think it is quite clear from the original article in the Chicago Tribune (which you plagarize, by the way, without giving any credit) that it was the Florida Department of Citrus that alerted the researchers to the fact that the furanocoumarins in grapefruit juice have a short shelf-life. (It is these furanocaumarins that doctors were seeking to use in conjunction with the rapamycin.)
This isn’t all the result of some conspiracy by the citrus growers! This is what naturally happens with grapefruit juice. I don’t know of anyone who is buying grapefruit juice in the grocery store because they want high amounts of furanocaumarins!
However, somebody very much on the ball from the Florida Department of Citrus new enough (and cared enough) to create a special process specifically for the doctors that would keep these key chemicals from breaking down, and made a special batch.
I think congratulations are in order for the Department, the doctors and especially for the patient Albina Duggan. No conspiracies necessary here!
And next time, please attribute your material to the Chicago Tribune. Someone worked hard to bring this information to light, and they deserve credit.
