THE ADVENTURES OF IAN AND THE
GREAT SILVER DRAGON BRY-ANKH
These are the stories and adventures of a young boy named Ian and his mentor and close friend Bry-Ankh the great silver dragon. All good stories start with “once upon a time” and this one is no different. So let us begin, of course, at the beginning.
ONCE UPON A TIME, There lived in the land of four seasons a young lad by the name of Ian. Ian was the second and last son of a noble family. He had one older brother and an adoring mother and father. Ian’s mother was a teacher of small children and his father was the owner of several business concerns. They lived in a country estate with productive farm land and a wonderful view of the surrounding country side. At night Ian could look up into the clear dark sky and see more stars than anyone could count. There was only one thing missing in the life of young Ian and that was a close personal companion. That is someone he could tell his deepest secrets and desires to and play with at his leisure.
Ian loved to build things and make drawing. Sometimes he would ask his father to help him make miniature toys out of metal nuts and bolts and pieces of small steel. He really liked making something that had lots of little pieces. There were “Other Worldly Warriors” that his mother would bring home for Ian to assemble. These were great fun for Ian and he became so proficient at them that he could build them by just looking at the drawings. He even used the pieces to make up new Warriors of his own and would put them into fearsome poses.
Ian was good at drawing pictures of people and structures that he thought people would like to build someday. These houses of the future would be a great value to the owners because Ian always had good thoughts when he did his drawing.
He was, for the most part a happy young lad but he had no one to play with that was his own age or saw the world as he did.
Now Ian’s mother noticed the quite sadness in Ian and decided to bring him books about dinosaurs and dragon. Ian really enjoyed the books and learned the names of dinosaurs and when and where they lived. The fossil records of those times so long ago were just fascinating.
Now the dragon books were very much a different thing. What Ian noticed was that there were no fossils of dragons and no real evidence that they once were part of the ancient earth. This was very troubling to Ian because all these books about dragons made Ian wish he could see something that would make them real. He liked the idea of dragons flying through the sky and fire coming from there mouths. He made models of dragons and had his mother put blankets on his bed that had pictures of dragons on them. He was in love with the idea of a real dragon and if only he could see one.
Everyone in Ian’s family knew how much he dreamed of dragons. It was hard to tell Ian that some things in books might not be real and were just legends and myth’s. When Ian heard his family say these things he just knew that somewhere, somehow he would prove to them that dragons are real. He just knew it. In the dragon books that Ian’s mother brought him he discovered that there were two kinds of dragons. The first ones were considered the evil dragons and would not help in the affairs of humans. The second group were the ones that would help humans and were the dragons of good deeds and honesty.
These were the dragons that Ian thought about the most. He learned about
Brass dragons that stood 16 feet tall and had wings that would spread to a width of 60 feet. Then there were the Bronze dragons that could change form into smaller creatures and live with humans. And the Copper dragons that loved to play tricks and fool people with their jokes and clever wit. Gold dragons were the most dedicated to fighting evil and would administer punishment to the doers of evil and unjust deeds.
The Silver dragons were the ones that Ian admired the most. They stood up to 22 feet tall and had wings that stretched to 150 feet. They were the true flyer’s of the dragon world and loved to stay in the cold clear air for hours at a time. They could change their shape like the Bronze dragons and liked the company of humans and would stay in that form for years if it pleased them. The Silver dragons could talk to people like most dragons could but would not trick them like the evil dragons.
Silver dragons lived in groups called “clans” and enjoyed the social life that living in a family would bring. They were kind and caring creatures and champions of justice when called upon. A Silver dragon is very wise and is a great teacher.
The home or “lair” of a Silver dragon will have large cavernous rooms for it’s guest to visit and relax in. There will be a library that contains all of the dragon clans history and philosophy. The lair will also have at least one clinic room in which it can make medicines to help those who are in it’s care. Remember that the Silver dragons purpose is to help and care for humans that have sought out it’s wisdom and help.
Every dragon will have a treasure room in which it will keep all of the things that it has collected over its lifetime. A Silver dragon will have beautifully crafted jewelry and finely woven cloth fabric. They like fine gem stones and wonderful art and sculpture. They will not have lot of these items as they are not greedy but they are treasures that bring them much enjoyment when they are in their lairs. And these items can be used as teaching tools when helping their human students understand the great truths and laws of this world and the universe.
A Silver dragon has many distinguishing features that give it its almost metallic look. The scales are so close together that the dragon appears to be made of one solid piece of moving silver metal. The two horns on it’s head have black tips at the ends and slope backwards along its head at just the right angle. The tongue of a Silver dragon is straight and not forked like a snakes. This feature speaks to the honesty and great integrity of a Silver dragon.
The head of a Silver dragon has a frill or comb on the top that has spikes that are tipped in black. A frill is something that looks a lot like a plume of feathers that would be on the top of a warriors helmet. Underneath the mouth there is a small frill that looks like a very fine beard. When a Silver dragon has it’s mouth shut there are no teeth showing. In this way it can look at you and smile. This is very helpful when a Silver dragon shows itself to a human.
As you can see a Silver dragon is indeed a great and magnificent dragon and is to be looked upon with both admiration and splendor. This is the dragon that Ian dreamed of and someday wanted to meet. He talked to his older brother about such a dragon and his brother said “dragons were only myths and imaginary “and that Ian would never have such a friend.
These words would make Ian very sad and for a time he did not think about dragons and the wisdom that they possessed. An older brother has much influence over a younger brother. But sometimes life has a way of making thing different and dreams do come true.
It was Summer in the land of four seasons and Ian was outside enjoying the warm sun. He had with him one of his dragon books and was sitting on a large rock that was behind the family’s home. The rock was warm with the heat of the sun and Ian was having fun looking at his dragon book and dreaming the kinds of dreams young children dream when they have time to just sit and be still.
Sometime while Ian was sitting and thinking about dragons he fell into an afternoon nap. He was laying on his side with the book in his hand when he saw a bright light explode in his mind behind his closed eyes. This sudden flash startled Ian awake and he opened his eyes and realized that he had been napping. He also noticed that there was a strange odder in the air. The air smelled like it does just after a warm Spring rain. But the sun was out and very bright and there were no rain clouds in the sky.
Ian rubbed his eyes to become fully awake. As he did this he noticed that there was a shadow next to the rock that he was sitting on that had an odd shape. There must be some clouds in the sky behind him blocking the sun but the shadow did not move. This is most strange Ian thought and he turned around to look in the direction of the sun.
When he turned around he almost fell off his rock for there behind him was a great creature. It was not a cloud that made the shadow that Ian had seen but this creature. The creature was huge and blocked out the sun with it’s massive size. It was at this moment that Ian realized this creature had a shape and the shape was that of a dragon!!
That was not possible there was no such thing as a dragon. Ian’s brother had told him so. They were only myths and parts of a persons imagination. But here it was right in front of him. He was frozen in both fear and excitement at the same time. He did not know what to do.
At that moment the dragon folded in it’s great wings and looked at Ian and sat down quietly on its tail. Ian noticed that the sun behind the dragon made it shine like a very finely polished mirror. Could it be that this dragon sitting in front of Ian was a Silver dragon? Just as soon as Ian had this thought the dragon lowered its great head and smiled at Ian. I was the most pleasant and loving smile that Ian had ever seen. It was almost as nice a smile as Ian’s mother would give him. Ian was astonished. The dragon had actually smiled at him and seemed to be able to understand what he was thinking.
Then Ian heard words sounding in his mind and they said. “Ian, do not be afraid. I will not harm you. My name is Bry-Ankh and I am a Silver dragon of the clan of Ankh.
You believed so hard in dragons that it became safe for me to reveal to you that dragons are real and part of your world.”
Ian was still thinking about that wonderful smile and it took him a moment to realize that someone or thing was speaking to him. He said “Who spoke to me? I don’t see anyone around but us. I mean myself and this, this dragon.”
Bry-Ankh looked Ian in the eyes and replied “ It was me dear Ian, the dragon that you see. I have the ability to speak to you in your own language. I have may abilities and speech is just one of them. You wanted a special friend and I am that friend , teacher, and mentor if you would allow me to be so”
Ian started to relax a little bit now. He felt his breathing trying to come back to normal as well as the rapid beating of his heart. “But how can you be real? Dragons are not supposed to exist. I was just day dreaming about them for the fun of it and here you are. What am I to do now? What if someone sees you or hears me talking to a creature that looks like a dragon. People will think I am not of my right mind or that I am seeing imaginary things.”
Bry-Ankh just looked at Ian and smiled that wonderful smile and all of Ian’s questions seemed to no longer be important. Bry-Ankh replied “ Dear Ian do not be worried for when I am with you no one else will be able to see us. As far as any other people are concerned the time I spend with you will not be noticed. We dragons know how to control time and will only be seen and heard by people we want to communicate with. No one but us will know of our friendship. That is ,of course, if you are willing to spend time with dragon? “
Ian was still stunned from this sudden turn of events and did not know what to think. He had no answers for this question for the idea of a real dragon was just too much to understand. Here he was seeing this huge creature and it was talking to him and it made sense and told him to relax and accept what was being offered.
Ian took a long deep breath and said “ Bry-Ankh how do I know that you are real and not my imagination? Can you prove to me that you are what and who you say you are?”
Bry-Ankh took a long slow breath and got himself a little more comfortable and let his long tail curl up around his legs. He then said “ Ian if you will trust me just a little I can show you a world of things and places of the past and even of the possible future. All it will take from you is a little trust.”
Ian looked Bry-Ankh in the eyes and there once again was that loving smile and Ian could do nothing but say “yes”.
Bry-Ankh leaned closer to Ian and told him to close his eyes and keep them closed and that he would tap him on the head with one of his claws. Ian sat there with his eyes closed and he felt a gentle touch on his head and then Ian’s mind seemed to explode with color and sound.
Ian found himself floating high above a bright blue planet with water surrounding a large mass of dry land. On this land there were all kinds of animals that Ian knew to be dinosaurs and in the water there were more swimming dinosaurs. The world was warm and the animals were everywhere. Next the land and sea exploded in such violence that mountains turned into volcanoes that shot flame and dust into the air. The land mass split into seven pieces and moved across the waters and the seas filled in the space between the land. Some of the dinosaurs did not survive but others took their place. The climate changed many times and the air went for clear to very dirty with the dust from the volcanoes. The plants and animals lived and died and lived again. Ian realized this was the cycle of life and death upon the earth. He saw the animals change with time as they got very large with the abundant plant life then small when the plants were few and the land was dry.
Ian was looking out at the stars that showered the earth with the soft light of night and saw a large object coming towards the earth. This object was a large space rock that
struck the earth with great force and turned day into night and shook the earth with huge waves in the sea’s. Many of the dinosaurs died right away. The rest of them died later as did most of the plants as the dust in the air blocked the sun and the earth grew cold and dark.
Ian was saddened by all of the destruction but as before he noticed that once again life in the sea and plants on the land started to grow. As the plants grew so did the animal life return just as before. But this time the animals were different. Gone were the old dinosaurs and new animal life flourished on the earth. In the air there were creatures that flew that were somewhat like the old flying dinosaurs and at the same time different. Ian looked closely at these fliers and they looked familiar. Yes it was true, they were dragons! All sizes shapes and colors and they were everywhere in the air. They flew with such grace and ability that it was just amazing to watch.
Just as before the earth still went through changes as the seven land masses moved farther apart and the top and bottom of the earth became covered in ice and snow. These are the natural cycles of the earth and through it all the only constant was the dragons. They were watching and learning and understanding the nature of the earth and the stars above the earth. They were becoming wise.
Ian saw other life start to flourish on the lands of the earth and they were the first humans. They were small at first and lived in caves and were hunters of the abundant wildlife. With time they started to form small villages and learned to grow crops in the fields. There villages grew and became small cities and then bigger cities. And then these humans started to have fights with neighboring villages and cities. The fights turned into wars and Ian saw large and small armies of men attack each other across different parts of the world. Always above all the violence were the dragons who were watching and learning.
The world did what it always does and things changed as the humans would build large cities in the deserts and along the rivers and then destroy then in wars that seemed to increase in violence and destruction. Ian was aware that while the great cities were being built the dragons would fly around the cities a lot and when the wars started the dragons would leave the sky. This was a curious event and Ian was puzzled as to why the dragons would come and go.
Ian had a great sadness in his heart as he watched men build great cities and then states and countries all over the world just to destroy them at a later date. He could not understand why humans had this great desire to destroy the wonderful things that they would build. As he was watching the view of the world change and turn beneath him he saw what appeared to be his own time and how things looked to him in the present. Just as fast as he saw his own time the earth move still forward and the scenes changed again.
This time the cities and countries were huge and the population of the earth by humans appeared to be like a colony of ants. There were so many people with devices that moved on the ground and sea and in the air. Everywhere there was motion and people were moving faster and faster. The cities glowed at night with light like the stars and no one seemed to take time to rest or stop.
Like before wars would still start. But now the wars were world wide with death and destruction on a massive scale. Men would fight each other with powerful armies and the nations were leveled to the ground to be rebuilt once again.
Ian watched this cycle and hoped with all his heart that it would end and humans would learn to live in peace as the dragons did. He wanted men to enjoy the values that they were creating and the things of beauty that they made. Something was not letting that happen. Ian wanted to know what that something was. As he was thinking these thoughts Ian saw objects start to fly into the air from all the countries of the earth. He watched these small dart like things arch across the sky and then start to fall back to the earth on a different nation or city. When the darts landed they would explode with a blinding flash of light and the biggest explosions that Ian had ever seen. Each city would be instantly destroyed. The sky grew dark with death and destruction as the huge mushroom shaped clouds rose into the dirty air. The clouds spread all over the earth and everything under them died.
Ian started to get tears in his eyes and his heart felt so heavy with this last and final picture. This time nothing returned to the earth not even the dragons. The planet was still and lifeless. The sun did what it had always done and the rain and the snow returned to the earth but there was no reborn life. The last act of humans was to destroy everything that lived. What a tragedy to occur in such a beautiful place.
Ian was devastated by what he had just saw and did not know what to think of these events. He was about to shed more tears when he felt the slightest tap on his head and his eyes snapped open and he was once again at his home in his garden with a dragon.
Ian did not know what to think or feel. He was frustrated, mad, sad, and full of questions all at the same time. Bry-Ankh looked at him and smiled. He seemed to smile a lot Ian thought and said to him.
“Ian you have just seem and felt the history of this planet you call earth. Most of what you experienced was the past and was very real and accurate. However the last things that you saw were what could come about in a possible future. Those events can be changed and mankind does not have to destroy itself and everything else. You see we dragons are sworn to help men if they ask us. You have asked to see a dragon and am I not here with you now? We dragons, as you saw, have been on this planet for a very long time. We learned a long time ago how to act with each other and the rest of the life forms on earth in a peaceful way. We learned to develop our minds to understand the forces of nature and the stars in the sky.
We became what are called conscience beings. I know these are big words and you do not understand what they mean. I will explain what they mean each time we meet. It will take a lot of time but to the rest of the world around you they will notice nothing. Remember we dragons can control time.
Ian took a deep breath and a great sigh of relieve left his body. He did not understand everything Bry-Ankh was saying but he felt in his heart the words were true and honest.
Bry-Ankh continued, “The dragons of the earth learned to live in peace by applying a technique called Integrated Thinking. From this way of thinking we discovered how to get to the essence of all things. You see dragons have what is called a bicameral brain. It is the same brain pattern that humans have. It means that we both have a two part, or chamber brain. It is made up of both a left and right side and each side has the ability to communicate with the other. I know this is very hard to understand right now but you need to know how your mind works and how it looks at the rest of the world around you. I will explain these ideas to you in much detail latter. For now I want to leave you with one last thought.
The dragons made up a code of conduct that we use as we interact with humans and, for a matter of fact , with other dragons. A code is a set of rules that we agree to live by. The code is this.
Rule 1: No dragon or group of dragons may initiate force, threat of force, or fraud against a dragon or the property of a dragon.
Rule 2: Force may be used only in defense against any dragon that violates Rule 1.
Rule 3: No exceptions shall ever exist to Rules 1 and 2.
These are the rules that we dragons must live by and they are the same rules that we use when teaching or working with humans. It is our hope that someday humans will use the same code in their lives.”
Ian’s head was swimming with all the ideas that Bry-Ankh just told him and he was very confused. He asked, “Bry-Ankh, how will I ever learn and understand all these things? There are so many and the words do not make sense to me. All that I have seen and heard makes me believe that people are really bad and they only make things that in the end they destroy.”
Bry-Ankh looked at Ian with so much love in his eyes that Ian could not help but see how much Bry-Ankh cared. He said “ Ian, all people have the ability to love just as I love you and your family loves you. They just need to learn how to find that love in themselves and then give it to others. The best way to find that love is through the creation of values that they can give to others. The act of creating opens the door of love that is in everyone.
But that is enough for now. You have seen and learned a lot of new and exiting things today so now it is time to play. “ Ian was so glad to hear the word play as he really needed to have some fun. “What shall we do?” asked Ian. “How about a game of tag” replied Bry-Ankh. “But remember we dragons can change shape”
And with that last word there was a small bright flash of light and Bry-Ankh turned into the most beautiful butterfly that Ian had ever seen. He said “Catch me if you can” and off he flew across the garden with Ian laughing and running after him.
Ian’s mother heard the laughing coming from the garden and looked out the window and saw young Ian running after a very pretty butterfly and she thought, “My what a lovely sight”, and she smiled the smile that only mothers can and watched him play.
